Tom: "Stop Troy, stop. We go down the hill, Troy"
Troy: "I thought we were going to Upper Warden."
Tom: "Yeah, we are. Upper Warden is down the hill; Lower Warden is up the hill."
Troy: "That doesn't make any sense."
Tom: "Troy, this is Midsomer!"
Troy: "Sorry, I forgot"

— Barnaby and Troy

Midsomer is a fictional English county which consists of numerous chocolate box villages. The county town is Causton where the now retired Detective Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby (John Nettles) and his wife Joyce (Jane Wymark) live. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is located there and is where Tom's cousin, the new Detective Chief Inspector John Barnaby works along with his Detective Sergeant. The emblem for Midsomer Constabulary is a badger, as shown in the series. The first village to be featured in an episode was Badger's Drift, which was the setting for the pilot episode The Killings at Badger's Drift.
